What is retail all about? It is anything to do with selling goods to prospective customers. This is what a retail salesperson does every day that they go to work. They are usually dressed for the audience they are trying to impress, have the smooth talk to get the customers interested and are usually the customers best friend. This particular job even has a stereotype! Thanks to media and books, someone who hasnt been in retail sales before will often get the immediate image of this poor, down in his luck salesman who just cant seem to ever make a decent living. Well, it is true that the average annual pay for a retail salesperson might not make a person in this job rich, but it is actually quite a satisfactory job for people who truly enjoy selling goods.

Anyone who enjoys being around people and helping them find the right product they are looking for would probably find this job a perfect match for them. There isn’t even any real need to go to school for this sort of thing, depending on the type of sales job the person is looking for. It is fairly easy for just about anyone to get into if they are interested in selling goods. There are people in this world that could sell an empty tin can if they wanted to and these are the type of people who would find this job to be the perfect career for them.

How is a retail salesperson a customer service career? Think about what customer service is and what a retail salesperson does on a daily basis. It is the quality of the customer service that the retail salesperson gives to the customer that inclines the customer to do business at their particular store. Poor customer service will usually cost a sales person a possible sale. A good retail salesperson who knows how to do their job right will treat each customer much like a friend, make them feel comfortable and help the customer find exactly what they are looking for if they can. A retail salesperson who is great at their job has a lot of opportunity to turn this into the perfect career for themselves, because along with the pay that they get they have the chance to make commission off of each sale they make. These people, if they do well enough, may even have the opportunity to be promoted and eventually supervise or manage their own store and with this comes even higher pay. There are many others who may even decide to start their own store and sell shoes, clothing, or electronics and can be quite successful at it.

Why would anyone want a customer service career in retail sales? There are a lot of people out there who are natural sales people and who seem to be able to entice most of their customers to buy something in their store, even if the customer wasn’t looking for that product originally. These successful retail sales people may even be able to encourage customers to come back because they were so helpful. It really is the perfect job for anyone who likes to be around people and who like to help people find the product they want or need.
