Banquet Bartender (Part-Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking enthusiastic and friendly part - time, as needed, Banquet Bartender for special events. This position provides guests an unparalleled customer service experience.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable preparing drink orders for guests according to specified recipes using measuring systems. Issue, open, and serve wine/champagne bottles. Set up and maintain cleanliness and condition of bar, bar unit, tables, and other tools. Prepare fresh garnishes for drinks. Stock ice, glassware, and paper supplies. Transport supplies to bar set-up area. Wash soiled glassware. Remove soiled wares from bar top and tables and place in designated area. Anticipate and communicate replenishment needs. Process all payment methods. Count bank at end of shift, complete designated cashier reports, resolve any discrepancies, drop off receipts, and secure bank. Secure liquors, beers, wines, coolers, cabinets, and storage areas. Complete closing duties.

This position requires Saturday and Sunday availability. Holidays and some evenings are required. The San Diego Natural History Museum is open daily, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Major Responsibilities:

Follow Museum and Department safety and security policies and procedures to ensure a clean, safe, and secure environment.

Develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with other employees and departments.

Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire work shift.

Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 25 pounds without assistance.

Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping.

Follow appropriate procedures for serving alcohol. (T.I.P.S., L.E.A.D., ServSafe, RBS)

Anticipate and communicate replenishment needs promptly, ensuring no shortages throughout scheduled function time, and ensuring proper authorization for additional payments as required prior to replenishing.

2 years of restaurant bartending experience and/or banquet bartending experience preferred.

Must be ServSafe and RBS certified or willing to get within first 30 days of employment.

Must possess valid food handler card or willing to get in first (30) days of employment.

T.I.P.S and/or L.E.A.D. certified a plus

Strong math aptitude.

Comfortable dealing with a wide array of guests and customer service situations.

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking enthusiastic and friendly part-time, as needed, Lead Banquet Bartender for special events. This position provides guests an unparalleled customer service experience. The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing bar staff, preparing and serving drinks, while continually maintaining a pleasant and professional demeanor.

Roles and responsibilities:

Follow appropriate procedures for serving alcohol. (T.I.P.S., L.E.A.D., ServSafe, RBS)

Supervises and address employee issues and general issues at the bar.

Prepare alcohol and non-alcohol beverages (including garnishes for mixed drinks) for patrons.

Interact with bar customers to take and serve beverage orders while ensuring all other bartenders are doing the same.

Check customer identification and confirm legal drinking age is met.

Strictly follows serving guidelines to all guests with attention to intoxicated customers; makes judgements regarding when to slow a guest down or cut them off.

Knowledge of the bar menu options to answer guest inquiries and requests in a courteous and polite manner.

Provide the highest-level of customer service to our guests (both internal and external) through active engagement and a friendly attitude.

Develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with colleagues.

Anticipate and communicate replenishment needs promptly, ensuring no shortages throughout scheduled function time.

Set-up and transport supplies to bar area(s).

Clean the bar, stock bar items, and maintain overall cleanliness at all times.

Wash bar glasses and any other bar equipment.

Handle money, operates the payment collection system, and accurately makes change.

Oversee and assist bar staff with any money handling concerns or issues with the payment system.

Count bank at end of shift, complete reports, resolve any discrepancies, drop off receipts, and secure bank.

Secure liquors, beers, wines, coolers, cabinets, and storage areas. Complete closing duties.

Maintain a high-level of personal hygiene routine to represent a clean and professional environment.

Paleontology Apprentice (Part-Time, Temporary)

STEM APPRENTICESHIPS:

The grant-funded San Diego Natural History Museum STEM research apprenticeship program provides training and mentoring in curation, imaging, databasing protocols, and collections-based research to students, to prepare them for continued advancement in the natural sciences, which can translate to career pathways in academia and research, as well as environmental consulting.

Applications are invited for one (1) paid undergraduate student apprentice position in the Department of Paleontology at the San Diego Natural History Museum (SDNHM).

OBJECTIVES AND DUTIES:

The Paleontology Apprentice will contribute to a project focused on documenting the paleobiological history of the southern California region.

Potential tasks may include the following:

Mechanical preparation of invertebrate and vertebrate fossils using static hand tools and pneumatic tools

Wet screening of sediment samples to concentrate micro-invertebrate and micro-vertebrate fossils

Consolidation of fossils using various chemical consolidants

Microscopic “picking” of wet-screened sediment concentrate for micro-invertebrate and micro-vertebrate fossils

General sorting and taxonomic identification of invertebrate and vertebrate fossils

Organizing sorted fossils into individual species lots and placing in archival specimen trays, plastic vials, glass vials, and/or gel capsules

Entering collection locality and specimen identification information into the SDNHM Paleontology Collection Database

Placing organized, trayed, catalogued, and numbered fossils into steel drawers and storage cabinets in the SDNHM Paleontology Collection.

Examples of projects to be worked on as part of the apprenticeship may include:

Late Pleistocene terrestrial and marine microvertebrate fossils from coastal southern California

Early and middle Pleistocene terrestrial macrovertebrate fossils from inland southern California

Late Pliocene and late Miocene marine invertebrate and vertebrate fossils from coastal and inland southern California

Middle Miocene terrestrial vertebrates from coastal southern California

Middle Eocene terrestrial vertebrate fossils from coastal southern California

Late Cretaceous marine invertebrate fossils from coastal southern California

The Paleontology Apprentice will be expected to create a final report or presentation on their work. Apprentices will regular instruction, guidance, and follow-up for all tasks assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To be considered for this position, applicants must reside in San Diego County and attend a community college or university in San Diego County. A special emphasis is placed on recruiting students who are members of groups currently underrepresented in STEM careers.

Paleontological Specialist (Part - Time, Temporary) [HOLD]

The Department of Paleontology at the San Diego Natural History Museum has an opening for paleontological field monitor. This position will be part-time temporary, as needed (0 – 29 hours per week). All work is funded through contracts.

The San Diego Natural History Museum is run and operated by the San Diego Society of Natural History, a private non-profit scientific organization incorporated in 1874. The Museum’s mission is to interpret the natural world through research, education and exhibits; to promote understanding of the evolution and diversity of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California; and to inspire in all a respect for nature and the environment.

Within the Museum, the Department of PaleoServices specializes in paleontological resource management. Our focus is on the recognition, recovery, and preservation of the significant and unique paleontological resources that occur in the greater southern California region.

Major Responsibilities:

Field monitoring of active mass grading, trenching, and other excavation activities into potentially fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks (Cenozoic and upper Mesozoic marine and/or non-marine rock units) in the greater southern California region.

Field monitor will work in close proximity to heavy equipment and be expected to work safely, to collect unearthed fossils, and to record relevant stratigraphic and taphonomic data.

Field monitoring can include working at distant locations for a week at a time, with commensurate reimbursement of per diem and mileage.

Opportunities for field survey work and fossil preparation are also possible.

Scheduled work hours are typically between the hours of 7 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday; however, work may also occur at night or on weekends.

Qualifications:

A minimum of a B.S. in Geology or a related discipline with an emphasis in paleontology.

Experience in field paleontology and stratigraphy is preferred.

Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs

Have a valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record.

Visitor Services Associate (Part-Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking enthusiastic and friendly part-time Visitor Services Associates (VSAs) to assist guests at our Admissions Desk, Giant Screen Theater, and at Museum and exhibit entries. VSAs provide Museum guests with an unparalleled customer service experience in a fast-paced, educational, fun and entertaining environment. The ideal candidates will be comfortable shifting roles and responsibilities throughout the day while continually maintaining a pleasant and professional demeanor.

Responsibilities include:

Providing consistent and excellent customer service interactions with guests, members, staff, and anyone else that you may interact with at the Museum.

Stationed at the Admission Desks assisting guests in-person, or over the phone with sales for admission and programs, upselling memberships, as well as answering a variety of questions about the Museum and Balboa Park. Duties may also include surveying guests and collecting feedback on the guest experience.

Stationed at the entrance of exhibitions monitoring capacity, checking tickets, and directing guests (as needed).

Stationed at the Museum’s giant-screen theater, assisting guests with seating, and sanitizing the theater between each film showing.

Conducting other general visitor services duties, including but not limited to: describing Museum exhibitions with interest and accuracy; monitoring the cleanliness of exhibitions throughout the day; answering incoming phone calls professionally; and, keeping up-to-date on current promotions, programs, and procedures.

Warehouse Coordinator (Part-Time, Temporary)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is looking to internally hire a

part-time, temporary

Warehouse Coordinator

to assist with the evacuation of museum property from our off-site storage facility.

The museum warehouse is located in Chula Vista and serves as the off-site facility for storage of research specimens, exhibition objects, and miscellaneous items. This warehouse is owned by the Museum of Contemporary Art and storage space is being rented to the museum. In preparation for the development of a new Paleontology facility in the museum basement and the moving out of the warehouse, some items will need to be donated, discarded, sold, or brought back to the museum. The coordinator will facilitate this process by working with museum staff to determine item disposition, disposal, and movement solutions, while also coordinating and communicating with potential external stakeholders to ultimately empty the space.

Responsibilities

Manage existing inventory and update it as project progresses.

Work with appropriate museum staff to find potential institutions for items that need to be donated; communicate and coordinate with potential recipient individuals in a professional and courteous manner

Coordinate with the Facilities Director and other pertinent museum staff to transport warehouse items that need to return to the museum.

Organize delivery of dumpster and coordinate with Facilities and other museum staff to discard items.

Research freight or shipping options, oversee packing and shipping or pick up of items.

Required qualifications, skills, and abilities:

Highly organized, detail-oriented, excellent communication skills

Excellent customer service skills, must be comfortable communicating via phone and email with internal co-workers and external stakeholders

Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite

Comfortable working independently, occasionally alone at off-site storage facility

Must possess reliable smartphone for maintaining communication at off-site location

Have a valid driver's license and clean driving record

Possess valid forklift operator license, or be willing to obtain certification via 4-hour training at museum expense

Ability to lift at least 25 lbs.

Time Commitment:

This is a part-time, temporary position from July 1, 2023 through April 30, 2024

. This position will work approximately 8 hours per week although hours per week may vary depending on the work flow. Hours of work fall within regular weekday museum operating hours only (7am-7pm).
