Banquet Bartender (Part - Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking enthusiastic and friendly part - time, as needed, Banquet Bartender for special events. This position provides guests an unparalleled customer service experience.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable preparing drink orders for guests according to specified recipes using measuring systems. Issue, open, and serve wine/champagne bottles. Set up and maintain cleanliness and condition of bar, bar unit, tables, and other tools. Prepare fresh garnishes for drinks. Stock ice, glassware, and paper supplies. Transport supplies to bar set-up area. Wash soiled glassware. Remove soiled wares from bar top and tables and place in designated area. Anticipate and communicate replenishment needs. Process all payment methods. Count bank at end of shift, complete designated cashier reports, resolve any discrepancies, drop off receipts, and secure bank. Secure liquors, beers, wines, coolers, cabinets, and storage areas. Complete closing duties.

This position requires Saturday and Sunday availability. Holidays and some evenings are required. The San Diego Natural History Museum is open daily, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Major Responsibilities:

Follow Museum and Department safety and security policies and procedures to ensure a clean, safe, and secure environment.

Develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with other employees and departments.

Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire work shift.

Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 25 pounds without assistance.

Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping.

Follow appropriate procedures for serving alcohol. (T.I.P.S., L.E.A.D., ServSafe, RBS)

Anticipate and communicate replenishment needs promptly, ensuring no shortages throughout scheduled function time, and ensuring proper authorization for additional payments as required prior to replenishing.

2 years of restaurant bartending experience and/or banquet bartending experience preferred.

Must possess valid food handler card or willing to get in first (30) days of employment.

T.I.P.S and/or L.E.A.D. certified a plus

Strong math aptitude.

Comfortable dealing with a wide array of guests and customer service situations.

Must be ServSafe and RBS certified or willing to get within first 30 days of employment.

Roles and responsibilities:

Prepare alcohol and non-alcohol beverages (including garnishes for mixed drinks) for patrons.

Paleontological Specialist (Part - Time, Temporary) [HOLD]

The Department of Paleontology at the San Diego Natural History Museum has an opening for paleontological field monitor. This position will be part-time temporary, as needed (0 – 29 hours per week). All work is funded through contracts.

The San Diego Natural History Museum is run and operated by the San Diego Society of Natural History, a private non-profit scientific organization incorporated in 1874. The Museum’s mission is to interpret the natural world through research, education and exhibits; to promote understanding of the evolution and diversity of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California; and to inspire in all a respect for nature and the environment.

Within the Museum, the Department of PaleoServices specializes in paleontological resource management. Our focus is on the recognition, recovery, and preservation of the significant and unique paleontological resources that occur in the greater southern California region.

Major Responsibilities:

Field monitoring of active mass grading, trenching, and other excavation activities into potentially fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks (Cenozoic and upper Mesozoic marine and/or non-marine rock units) in the greater southern California region.

Field monitor will work in close proximity to heavy equipment and be expected to work safely, to collect unearthed fossils, and to record relevant stratigraphic and taphonomic data.

Field monitoring can include working at distant locations for a week at a time, with commensurate reimbursement of per diem and mileage.

Opportunities for field survey work and fossil preparation are also possible.

Scheduled work hours are typically between the hours of 7 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday; however, work may also occur at night or on weekends.

Qualifications:

A minimum of a B.S. in Geology or a related discipline with an emphasis in paleontology.

Experience in field paleontology and stratigraphy is preferred.

Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs

Have a valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record.

Security Officer (Part-Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking intuitive, reliable, attentive, detail-oriented individuals with strong communication and customer service skills as part-time/as-needed Security Officers. Security Officers are expected to uphold Museum rules and regulations by patrolling, observing, and reporting to the Facilities Manager and Facilities Director. Security Officers are also expected to set the example for Museum safety and stellar customer service, and assist Museum guests, employees, and vendors during emergency situations.

Areas of responsibilities include:

Patrol, observe, and report to Facilities Manager and Facilities Director.

Provide a high level of customer service and assistance to all Museum guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors.

Maintain a strong working knowledge of Museum policies and procedures, enforcing them with guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors as needed.

Document daily actions and situations in a Daily Log.

Respond to complaints and/or requests for assistance and evaluate appropriate course of action.

Respond to emergency situations within and directly outside Museum (i.e. natural disasters, medical emergencies, etc.)

Assist with building access and receiving/deliveries.

Perform other duties assigned by Facilities Manager and Facilities Director.

Qualifications:

Previous security experience at a cultural institution is preferred

Excellent customer service skills with the ability to maintain a professional and calm demeanor in a challenging, dynamic environment with all types of guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors.

Strong communication skills with attention to detail.

Must be able stand for long periods of time, respond quickly and communicate verbally for the majority of each shift.

Ability to perform crowd control by providing clear guidance and direction

Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification

They will be responsible assisting with the load-in and load-out of events, assisting in the set-up and break-down of Museum events, assisting in ensuring the safety of the Museum, having a Museum presence. This position requires the coordination of on-site event activities, including working with vendors, clients and guests, while continually maintaining a pleasant and professional demeanor. Hours are determined on as-needed basis.

Roles and responsibilities:

Event Presence

Reviews work order and becomes familiar with purpose/type of event, timeline/agenda of the event, as well as diagrams for each location.

Communicates with on-site Event Coordinator, Event Manager, or Director of Events.

Assists with set-up and break-down of events.

Follows designated directions from on-site Event Coordinator, Event Manager, Director of Events, or Special Events lead.

Maintains museum presence while guests and vendors are inside the facility.

Provides post-event feedback to Event Coordinator, Event Manager, Director of Events, or Special Events lead.

Communicates with the Food and Beverage staff to ensure all contracted services are in place by the allotted time.

Museum Safety and Cleanliness

Assists to ensure that Fire, City, Police, Park, Facility, and Alcohol codes are being followed to ensure that Museum is operating within the law.

Be prepared to evacuate guests if necessary.

Works with Facilities staff at the end of the event to ensure that all exhibit areas/items are returned to regular for the Museum to open the next day.

Works with the Food and Beverage staff at the end of the event to ensure that all items are returned to its proper storage location.

Vendor Load-in and Load-out

Ensures that only appropriate vendors access loading areas.

Operates Sidewalk Lift and Freight Elevator for vendors if Building Operations staff is unavailable.

Follows wristband procedures as vendors arrive for load-in and when vendor crew returns for load-out.

Stops unauthorized vendors or Balboa Park guests from entering the Museum during load-in and load-out.

Ensures vendors are following facility guidelines.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Visitor Services Associate (Part - Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking enthusiastic and friendly part-time Visitor Services Associates (VSAs) to assist guests at our Admissions Desk, Giant Screen Theater, and at Museum and exhibit entries. VSAs provide Museum guests an unparalleled customer service experience in a fast-paced, educational, and entertaining environment. The ideal candidates will be comfortable shifting roles and responsibilities throughout the day while continually maintaining a pleasant and professional demeanor.

Areas of responsibilities include:

Provide consistent and excellent customer service to guests, members, staff, and all other constituents that may come into the Museum. 

Stationed at the Admission Desks

providing assistance to

guests in person, or over the phone with sales for admission/memberships/programs as well as answering a variety of questions about the Museum and Balboa Park. Desk duties also include upselling memberships, donations, selling programs and surveying guests. 

Stationed at the entrance of exhibitions monitoring capacity, checking tickets, and directing guests (if applicable). 

Stationed at the Museum’s giant-screen theater, assisting guests with seating and sanitizing the theater as needed.

Other general visitor services duties, including but not limited to: Describing Museum exhibitions with interest and accuracy; monitoring the cleanliness of exhibitions throughout the day; answering incoming phone calls professionally; and, keeping up-to-date on current promotions, programs, and procedures. 

Encourage guests to maintain COVID safety guidelines. 

Qualifications:

Friendly personality with a guest-focused attitude and a commitment to creating a welcoming and fun atmosphere for the Museum's visitors. 

Professional demeanor, reliable, punctual, and hardworking. 

A background in customer service, hospitality, or retail with experience in credit card/cash handling and CRM database and/or ticketing software knowledge is highly desirable.  

Familiarity with Balboa Park a plus.  

Must be able stand for long periods of time and communicate verbally for the majority of each shift.  

Ability to learn processes, procedures, and information quickly.
