Why A Customer Service Career?

If you have read any articles on customer service and the representatives who make up the army of men and women who solve problems for people they have never met, you may wonder why someone would want a customer service career.

Think about it, the pay is pretty low, no more than $25,000 typically, unless you are a customer service manager, customer service trainer, or customer service executive, you deal with stress everyday, you listen to people as they yell about something they don’t like about the company and you have to work odd hours.

So, again, the question needs to be asked, why would you choose a career in customer service?

Despite the problems that exist in the industry, and yes there are some but no more than any other industry sector, it can be a very rewarding career for the right individual.

For example, if you enjoy talking to people, then this is the perfect career for you. Whether it is working at a front desk, help desk, or over the phone, you will have the opportunity to speak, face to face, with customers on a regular basis and make new friends, develop connections and make people happy through the joy you exude from your own personality, working at a job you love.

No matter what form of customer service you are a part of, you will enjoy working with individuals who enjoy talking to people like yourself, and while you will deal with the occasional individual who is angry, you can challenge yourself to work hard to please them and make them happy. Nothing can be better for your day than when you meet an angry customer, and by the time they leave they are smiling and shaking your hand. That is the mark of a good customer service representative who really enjoys their job.

Of course, pay is low but you have a lot of freedom if you work in the type of customer service environment that only requires you to answer calls from customers, for example as part of a help line.

If you work in a call center environment as a customer service representative, then you will have the ability to dress casual, read a book and relax as the calls come in, which at times they do not. So, you are able to sit and talk with friends, read, do crosswords and wait for a call to come in.

Even with these benefits, it can still be hard to see why someone would actually want to be a customer service representative, making customer service their career, but it is important to remember that some people may enjoy working on oil rigs, while others do not, and it is all a matter of taste.

Different strokes for different folks. You may hate customer service and wish you could find another job, while another person feels they have fallen into a career that they love dearly. It is all a matter of perspective.
