Customer service is an important aspect of any company, yet many companies do not pay a great deal for their employees to be customer service representatives.
Not surprisingly, many people choose not to be customer service representatives because they do not see the money worth the difficulty some face while trying to troubleshoot customer problems or handling irate customers.
There is no reason to lie to you, customer service representatives do not get paid that much, and usually the pay scale is horribly constructed so that if you are with a company for an extended period of time, you are not benefiting at all.
Of course, that being said, there are many benefits to some customer service companies, and you may actually find a job with a higher paying customer service company, one which rewards its employees and is happy to keep them through any means necessary.
Typically, if you have been working as a customer service representative for less than one year, you can expect to be paid $10.25 an hour. For the purpose of this article, we will say you work 35 hours a week. Each year, you will bring in just over $17,700 a year in income, before taxes. This is usually not enough to live on for any individual, least of which one who has to support a family.
If you have worked for one to four years in the customer service industry, you can expect to be paid $19,202 in income, which again is before taxes. As a result, someone who has been with a company for four years can expect to only bring in an extra one dollar each hour, and in terms of yearly pay, it is only 12 percent higher.
If you work for a customer service company as a customer service representative for between five and nine years, then you will pull in on average $12.69, a raise of only $2.44 per hour. This will give you a yearly income of $21,319, a bit more than someone who has been with the company for one day, but not near as much as many deserve.
If you work for a company that specializes in customer service for ten to 19 years, then you will pull in $13.36 per hour, which equates to $22,444 per year in income.
As for those who work for 25 or more years as a customer service representative, they can expect to make $14.44 on average, which comes to $24,259 per year before taxes. So, someone who has been with the company for a quarter century or more can expect to only pull in 28 percent more in income, or $6,559 a year, more than someone who has been with the company for one day.
This creates a severe problem when individuals are looking for a job that will allow them to make money throughout their lives, where they will be happy and feel respected.
Of course, this does not factor in the promotions someone will get, or how their career in the customer service industry will advance. In fact, for those who work 25 or more years in the customer service field as customers service representatives, they can expect to make much more than $24,259 per year.
