Employment in the customer service industry means that you are taking part in a very important aspect of our society, one which requires you to be there for the customer, helping them learn products and procedures and assisting them with any trouble that they may have.

It can be a difficult industry to be a part of, but as a customer service representative, you will be front and center with the customers, speaking to them and being the face of the company you represent. As a result, it is very important that you know what you should and should not do when dealing with a customer.

First of all, never be rude with a customer and always understand things from their point of view. It is very important that you work hard to understand that they may not be happy with a product or service of the company, and it is your job to find out why and remedy the situation for them.

Second, never take abuse from a customer. While you are there for the customer to vent their problems to, this does not mean that they can put you down or demean you, so do not let them. In that case, alert a customer service executive of the problem and explain to the customer that you will disconnect the call if it continues. While you can do this, don’t do it if the customer has raised their voice, sometimes people just get a bit agitated and, without realizing it, raise their voice.

Lastly, always be happy in your job. A customer can hear if you are smiling and if you answer the phone with a frown, it is going to reflect bad on the company. Instead, make sure you smile and have a rosy personality while talking to a customer. Joke with them, laugh with them and you will find that they are more than ready to be nice to you.

Remember, what goes around comes around. Be nice to a customer and they will be nice to you.

When dealing with customers in the customer service industry as a customer service representative, you are going to deal with different types of customers. If you are a front desk customer service representative, you will deal face-to-face with individuals, while if you deal with customers over the phone, you will never see them. No matter if they are in front of you or 3,000 miles away, make sure you treat them all the same and with the same respect.

In conclusion, customer service jobs represent a large portion of our employment sector, with millions of individuals employed in a wide variety of customer service positions, from front desk customer service jobs to technical troubleshooting jobs that only exist over the phone. Customer service is, by definition, a noble industry for an individual to be a part of. Your entire goal is to help serve customers better through the effort of speaking to them directly to answer their questions and resolve their problems.
